WHAT YOU CAN DO AT HOME

5 things YOU can do at home and in your community that will have a positive impact:

  1. Get involved in local parks and recreation groups around your community. Volunteer to keep your green areas clean and enjoyable. Supporting local parks is a huge step toward making sure that wild areas are maintained.
  2. Support local small scale farmers. By supporting the little guy you can make a huge difference. Industrialized farms only exist because of the consumer. Consumers have the power to choose and by choosing to go local you are not only supporting sustainable farming but also contributing to the reduction in fuel consumption due to transport.
  3. Be conscious of your own habits. Mind your trash and what you wash down the drain. Remember that everything to put out there will eventually end up in the soil, water or the air. By monitoring our own impact on the environment we can reduce the amount of chemicals and drugs that end up in our ecosystem.
  4. Plant a sustainable green roof. Not easy or possible for everyone but it can be huge. By planting moss and other rapidly growing plants on top of a house or building you can greatly reduce the cost of heating and cooling. These green roofs also help to counter the problem of urban heat islands by supplying a cooling and insulating system.
  5. Write. If you really want to make a big bang write a letter to your local congress men or political advocate and push for conservation. Nothing will be done unless we speak up!

  1. It'd be cool if you had a map or even just a link for park involvement suggestion to lead people to volunteer sign-up links or simply a list of parks in their area. Sorry if that's a complicated suggestion!

  2. I like the list you wrote. Maybe for the second list, you should make your own list, instead of appropriating another one. Lists are good, though!
